About This Screening

Bowel Cancer Screening

Colorectal cancer is the fourth most common malignancy in the United Kingdom, with approximately 42,000 new cases diagnosed annually. When identified at an early stage, the survival rate exceeds 90%, making screening a clinically important tool for early detection. The Faecal Immunochemical Test (FIT) is a non-invasive, stool-based screening method recommended by NICE and used within the NHS national bowel cancer screening programme.

The FIT test works by detecting human haemoglobin in stool samples at concentrations not visible to the naked eye (occult blood). The presence of occult faecal blood may indicate colorectal pathology including adenomatous polyps — benign growths that can progress to malignancy if left undetected — as well as early-stage colorectal carcinoma. It is important to understand that a positive FIT result does not confirm cancer; blood may originate from haemorrhoids, inflammatory bowel disease, or other benign causes.

Key Highlights

  • 4th most common malignancy in the UK
  • Over 90% survival rate at early stage diagnosis
  • Convenient home sample collection
  • Non-invasive screening methodology
  • Detects occult blood undetectable visually

This screening involves a convenient home sample collection kit with clear instructions. A small stool sample is collected using the provided device and returned for quantitative laboratory analysis. Unlike older guaiac-based tests, the FIT test does not require dietary modification before sample collection, and it specifically detects human haemoglobin, reducing false positives from dietary sources.

The NHS currently offers bowel cancer screening to adults aged 56 to 74 every two years. This private screening is available to adults of any age and is particularly relevant for those with a family history of colorectal cancer, individuals experiencing altered bowel habits, or those who wish to screen more frequently or at a younger age than the NHS programme provides.

All laboratory analysis is performed by a UKAS-accredited facility. If a positive result is identified, our clinical team will discuss appropriate next steps, which typically include referral for colonoscopic investigation.

Adults Over 50

Risk increases with age; regular screening is appropriate for asymptomatic individuals.

Family History

First-degree relatives with colorectal cancer may warrant earlier and more frequent screening.

Associated Symptoms

Abdominal discomfort, unintentional weight loss, or unexplained fatigue.

How to Prepare

Follow these steps before your appointment for the most accurate results.

1

No dietary modifications or fasting are required before sample collection.

2

Follow the home collection kit instructions carefully — a small stool sample is all that is needed.

3

Avoid collecting a sample if you have active haemorrhoidal bleeding or are menstruating, as this may affect results.

4

Return the sample to the clinic as promptly as possible after collection.

5

Inform our team if you have a history of inflammatory bowel disease, as this may affect result interpretation.
