About This Screening
Advanced Cancer-Aware Health Screening – Women 60+
Women aged 60 and above face age-related health changes that benefit from systematic monitoring. Cancer risk increases with age, post-menopausal hormonal shifts affect cardiovascular and bone health, and metabolic conditions become more prevalent. This panel combines comprehensive organ function assessment with targeted cancer surveillance markers selected for their relevance to post-menopausal health.
The screening includes over 38 biomarkers covering all major organ systems. Full blood count identifies anaemia, infection, and haematological abnormalities. Liver function tests, kidney function markers (urea, creatinine, eGFR), and thyroid function assessment (TSH and Free T4) provide a broad metabolic overview. Hypothyroidism becomes more common in older women and can present with symptoms that overlap with other age-related conditions.
Key Highlights
- HE4 tumour marker for ovarian cancer surveillance
- Lp-PLA2 cardiovascular risk assessment
- Comprehensive bone health markers
- Thyroid function (hypothyroidism prevalent in older women)
- Glycaemic and metabolic health assessment
HE4 (Human Epididymis Protein 4) is included as a tumour marker with established utility in ovarian cancer surveillance. HE4 tends to be more specific than CA-125 in post-menopausal women, as it is less frequently elevated by benign conditions. In combination with clinical assessment, HE4 provides useful information for ovarian cancer risk evaluation in this age group.
Cardiovascular risk assessment includes a fasting lipid profile and NT-proBNP cardiac biomarker. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in women in the UK, and risk increases substantially after menopause due to declining oestrogen levels and associated changes in lipid metabolism. NT-proBNP can identify subclinical heart failure before symptoms develop, enabling earlier intervention.
Inflammatory markers (CRP and ESR) are included to detect underlying inflammatory processes, which may indicate autoimmune conditions, infection, or malignancy. Nutritional markers including vitamin D, vitamin B12, folate, and iron studies identify deficiencies that are common in older adults and can significantly affect quality of life.
All samples are processed by a UKAS-accredited laboratory. This screening is intended to complement, not replace, NHS screening programmes including breast screening and cervical screening where applicable.
