About This Screening
Cardiovascular Screening
Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of mortality in the United Kingdom, accounting for approximately 27% of all deaths. This screening provides a comprehensive cardiovascular risk assessment that extends beyond standard cholesterol measurement, incorporating advanced lipid subfractions, inflammatory markers, and glycaemic parameters.
The panel includes a full lipid profile alongside advanced markers such as Apolipoprotein B (ApoB), Lipoprotein(a), and LDL particle size. ApoB is present on all atherogenic lipoprotein particles and is increasingly recognised as a more accurate predictor of cardiovascular risk than LDL cholesterol alone. Lipoprotein(a) is a genetically determined risk factor that is frequently unmeasured in routine clinical practice — once identified, it can significantly alter risk stratification and management approach.
Key Highlights
- Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of mortality in the UK
- Myocardial infarction can occur with conventional lipids within reference range
- ApoB provides superior risk prediction compared to LDL-C alone
- Lp(a) is a genetically-determined risk factor frequently unmeasured
- Early identification enables lifestyle and pharmacological intervention
High-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) and homocysteine are included as inflammatory markers associated with cardiovascular risk. Elevated hs-CRP reflects systemic inflammation that contributes to atherosclerotic plaque development and instability. Homocysteine elevation, though less commonly measured, is an independent cardiovascular risk factor that may be modifiable with B-vitamin supplementation.
Fasting glucose and HbA1c are included because diabetes and prediabetes significantly elevate cardiovascular risk. Early identification of impaired glucose regulation enables lifestyle intervention that may reduce both metabolic and cardiovascular risk simultaneously.
This screening requires a fasted venous blood sample collected by our registered nurse at our City of London clinic. All samples are processed by a UKAS-accredited laboratory. Results are reviewed by our clinical team and delivered confidentially. This screening identifies risk factors — it does not diagnose cardiovascular disease.

Cardiovascular Risk Assessment
Standard lipid panels may not capture all relevant cardiovascular risk factors. This advanced panel includes ApoB, Lp(a), and inflammatory markers which provide additional prognostic information beyond conventional cholesterol measurement.

Who Should Take This Test?
Family History of Cardiovascular Disease
First-degree relatives with premature myocardial infarction or stroke warrant personal risk assessment.
Known Dyslipidaemia
Advanced lipid subfractionation provides additional information beyond standard lipid panel.
Type 2 Diabetes or Prediabetes
Diabetes significantly elevates cardiovascular risk; detailed assessment is appropriate.
Adults Over 40
Cardiovascular risk increases with age; baseline assessment allows for longitudinal monitoring.
How to Prepare
Follow these steps before your appointment for the most accurate results.
Fast for 10–12 hours before your appointment for accurate triglyceride, glucose, and advanced lipid results.
Water is permitted and encouraged during the fasting period.
Avoid alcohol consumption for 24 hours before your appointment.
Continue taking prescribed medications unless otherwise directed by your prescribing clinician.
Allow approximately 15–20 minutes for your appointment.
