About This Screening
Diabetes & Kidney Health Screening
Diabetes mellitus affects over 4 million people in the United Kingdom, with an estimated further 850,000 individuals living with undiagnosed type 2 diabetes. Chronic hyperglycaemia is the leading cause of end-stage renal disease in the UK, making combined diabetes and kidney screening clinically important.
This panel combines fasting glucose and HbA1c measurement with microalbumin testing to assess both glycaemic status and early kidney involvement. HbA1c reflects average blood glucose over the preceding two to three months and is the standard marker for diabetes diagnosis and monitoring. An HbA1c of 48 mmol/mol (6.5%) or above is diagnostic of diabetes, while values between 42–47 mmol/mol indicate prediabetes — a reversible state with appropriate lifestyle modification.
Key Highlights
- Early detection of diabetes and prediabetes
- HbA1c reflects glycaemic control over 2-3 months
- Microalbumin identifies early diabetic nephropathy
- Results inform lifestyle and clinical intervention
- Monitor glycaemic control in known diabetics
Microalbumin (urinary albumin) measurement is a particularly valuable component of this panel. Standard kidney function markers such as creatinine and eGFR may remain within the reference range until significant renal damage has occurred. Microalbuminuria — the presence of small amounts of albumin in the urine — is an early indicator of glomerular damage that frequently precedes measurable decline in kidney function. In diabetic patients, early detection of microalbuminuria enables intervention that may preserve renal function.
This screening is appropriate for adults with established diabetes risk factors, individuals with a family history of type 2 diabetes, those who are overweight, have a sedentary lifestyle, or have a history of gestational diabetes. It is also suitable for monitoring glycaemic control and kidney health in patients with known diabetes.
The blood sample is collected by a registered nurse at our City of London clinic. All analysis is performed by a UKAS-accredited laboratory. This screening provides laboratory data to assist in risk assessment — it is not a substitute for ongoing clinical management of diabetes.

Metabolic and Renal Health Assessment
Over 4 million individuals in the UK have diabetes, with many remaining undiagnosed. Uncontrolled hyperglycaemia is a leading cause of nephropathy, cardiovascular disease, and retinopathy. This panel detects diabetes and prediabetes, and includes microalbumin measurement which can identify early kidney damage before standard renal function tests become abnormal.

Who Should Take This Test?
Established Risk Factors
Family history of diabetes, overweight or obesity, sedentary lifestyle, or history of gestational diabetes increase type 2 diabetes risk.
Adults Over 40
Type 2 diabetes prevalence increases with age. Periodic screening is appropriate from age 40, or earlier with risk factors.
Known Diabetics
Regular HbA1c and microalbumin monitoring ensures adequate glycaemic control and identifies complications early.
Symptomatic Individuals
Polydipsia, polyuria, unintentional weight loss, fatigue, or visual disturbance may indicate undiagnosed diabetes.
How to Prepare
Follow these steps before your appointment for the most accurate results.
Fast for 8–12 hours before your appointment for accurate fasting glucose measurement.
Water is permitted and encouraged during the fasting period.
Continue taking prescribed medications including diabetes medications unless otherwise directed.
A urine sample may be required for microalbumin testing — avoid passing urine immediately before your appointment.
Allow approximately 15 minutes for your appointment.
