About This Screening
Allergy Screening
Allergic conditions affect approximately one in four people in the UK at some point during their lives, and the prevalence of IgE-mediated allergies has risen significantly over recent decades. While many people suspect they may have food or environmental allergies, clinical testing provides objective evidence that can guide appropriate management and avoidance strategies.
This screening panel measures allergen-specific IgE antibodies in the blood — the immune molecules responsible for triggering allergic reactions. Unlike skin prick testing, blood-based IgE testing can be performed regardless of skin conditions, antihistamine use, or dermatographism, and carries no risk of systemic allergic reaction during the test itself.
Key Highlights
- Identify specific IgE-mediated sensitivities
- Objective laboratory evidence of sensitisation
- Inform dietary modifications where indicated
- Quantitative results indicate sensitisation level
- Guide allergen avoidance strategies
The panel covers the most clinically relevant food allergens including cow's milk, egg, wheat, soya, peanut, tree nuts, fish, and shellfish. Environmental allergen testing includes house dust mite, cat and dog dander, grass pollen mix, tree pollen mix, and common moulds. These allergens account for the majority of IgE-mediated allergic reactions encountered in UK clinical practice.
It is clinically important to distinguish between IgE-mediated allergy and food intolerance, as the mechanisms and management differ significantly. This test specifically measures IgE-mediated responses — those responsible for symptoms such as urticaria (hives), angioedema, rhinitis, asthma exacerbation, and anaphylaxis. Non-IgE-mediated food sensitivities involve different immunological pathways and are not detected by this panel.
A positive result indicates sensitisation to a specific allergen, meaning the immune system produces IgE antibodies against that substance. However, sensitisation does not always equate to clinical allergy — some individuals produce IgE antibodies without experiencing symptoms on exposure. Results should therefore be interpreted alongside clinical history.
All samples are processed by a UKAS-accredited laboratory. Results are reviewed and reported with clinical context to support meaningful interpretation.

Who Should Take This Test?
Suspected Food Allergy
History of adverse reactions following food ingestion warrants objective allergen identification.
Seasonal Rhinitis
Identification of specific pollen sensitisation assists in targeted management and anticipatory treatment.
Asthma or Eczema
Allergic sensitisation frequently contributes to these conditions; identification may inform management.
Paediatric Allergy Assessment
Comprehensive allergen identification in children supports safe dietary planning and school management.
How to Prepare
Follow these steps before your appointment for the most accurate results.
No fasting is required for this blood test.
You may continue taking antihistamines — unlike skin prick testing, blood IgE testing is not affected by antihistamine use.
Continue taking all prescribed medications as normal.
Inform our team of any suspected allergens or previous allergic reactions to help with result interpretation.
Allow approximately 10–15 minutes for your appointment.
