About This Screening
Antenatal Infection & Immunity Screening
Antenatal screening is a clinically important component of pregnancy care, designed to identify infections, immunity gaps, and haematological conditions that may affect maternal or fetal health. The NHS offers routine screening during pregnancy, but many women choose to test earlier — particularly when planning a pregnancy — to allow time for vaccination, treatment, or specialist referral before conception.
This panel screens for vertically transmissible infections that can be passed from mother to baby during pregnancy or delivery. These include HIV, Hepatitis B, Syphilis, and Rubella immunity status. Early identification of these infections enables interventions that significantly reduce the risk of mother-to-child transmission. For example, antiretroviral therapy in HIV-positive mothers reduces vertical transmission risk to below 1%.
Key Highlights
- Comprehensive vertically transmissible infection screening
- Immunity assessment for rubella and varicella
- Blood group and Rh typing for alloimmunisation risk
- Screen for HIV, Hepatitis B and C, syphilis
- TORCH infection assessment (Toxoplasma, CMV)
The panel also includes blood group and Rhesus (Rh) typing. Rh-negative women carrying an Rh-positive fetus are at risk of Rh isoimmunisation, which can cause haemolytic disease of the newborn in subsequent pregnancies. Identifying Rh status early allows administration of anti-D immunoglobulin at appropriate intervals to prevent sensitisation.
Haemoglobinopathy screening checks for sickle cell disease and thalassaemia carrier status. These inherited conditions are more prevalent in certain ethnic groups but can occur in any population. If both parents carry a trait, there is a chance their child may be affected. Early identification allows genetic counselling and informed decision-making.
Full blood count and iron studies are included to identify anaemia, which is common during pregnancy and can affect both maternal wellbeing and fetal development. Thyroid function testing is also performed, as both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism can affect fertility and pregnancy outcomes.
All laboratory analysis is conducted by a UKAS-accredited facility. This screening is suitable for women who are currently pregnant, actively planning pregnancy, or considering conception in the near future.

Maternal and Fetal Health Assessment
Certain infections during pregnancy can cause congenital abnormalities, developmental sequelae, or pregnancy complications through vertical transmission. This screening identifies active infections and assesses immunity status to enable timely intervention or preventive measures.
Comprehensive vertically transmissible infection screening
Immunity assessment for rubella and varicella
Blood group and Rh typing for alloimmunisation risk
Screen for HIV, Hepatitis B and C, syphilis
TORCH infection assessment (Toxoplasma, CMV)
Haemoglobin electrophoresis for haemoglobinopathy carrier status
Thyroid function (essential for fetal neurodevelopment)
Who Should Take This Test?
First Trimester Pregnancy
Early pregnancy is optimal for this screening to permit timely intervention or monitoring where indicated.
Pre-Conception Planning
Testing before pregnancy allows time to address issues including vaccination for rubella or varicella if non-immune.
Fertility Treatment
Many fertility clinics require this screening before initiating treatment.
Supplementary to NHS Screening
This panel provides additional coverage beyond standard NHS antenatal screening.
