Private HPV Testing in the City of London

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection, with the majority of sexually active individuals acquiring at least one HPV type during their lifetime. While most HPV infections are cleared by the immune system within one to two years, persistent infection with high-risk HPV types — particularly types 16 and 18 — is associated with an increased risk of cervical, anal, and oropharyngeal cancers.

Our clinic offers HPV DNA testing, which detects the presence of high-risk HPV types from swab samples. This test identifies current HPV infection but does not determine whether the infection will persist or progress. It is important to understand that a positive HPV result does not mean you have or will develop cancer — the vast majority of HPV infections resolve spontaneously without clinical consequences.

The NHS cervical screening programme now uses HPV testing as its primary screening tool for women aged 25 and over. Our private HPV testing can complement, but should not replace, routine NHS cervical screening. Our clinic provides laboratory results only — we do not perform cervical smears, colposcopy, or provide clinical interpretation of HPV results in the context of cytology.

Who May Consider This Test

  • Women between NHS screening intervals who wish to check their HPV status privately
  • Individuals with a partner recently diagnosed with HPV or genital warts
  • Anyone who has had abnormal cervical screening results and wishes to monitor their HPV status
  • Men who have sex with men, where anal HPV infection may be relevant
  • Women and men who are vaccinated but wish to check for non-vaccine HPV types
  • Those seeking a comprehensive sexual health review that includes HPV screening

Preparing for Your HPV Test

1

Avoid sexual intercourse for 24 hours before your appointment if possible

2

Do not use vaginal creams, lubricants, or douches for 48 hours before a vaginal swab

3

If menstruating, it is preferable to reschedule — though testing can still be performed

4

This test uses a swab sample, not a blood test — our nurse will explain the process

5

Allow approximately 10 minutes for sample collection

Important Clinical Information

A positive HPV result does not indicate cancer. Further assessment including cervical screening should be arranged with a qualified clinician.
