Private Herpes Testing in the City of London

Herpes simplex virus (HSV) is one of the most prevalent viral infections worldwide. HSV-1 and HSV-2 can both cause genital and oral herpes. The World Health Organization estimates that approximately 3.7 billion people under the age of 50 have HSV-1 infection globally. Many individuals carry the virus without experiencing recognisable symptoms.

Our clinic offers type-specific HSV serology testing that distinguishes between HSV-1 and HSV-2 antibodies. This blood-based test detects IgG antibodies, which typically develop within two to twelve weeks of initial infection. It is important to understand that serology tests indicate whether you have been exposed to the virus at some point, but they cannot determine when or where you acquired the infection.

If you are experiencing active lesions or symptoms suggestive of a primary herpes outbreak, a swab-based PCR test is the preferred diagnostic method and offers greater clinical utility than serology. Our nursing team can perform swab collection during your appointment if active lesions are present. PCR testing can confirm the diagnosis and identify the virus type with high accuracy.

Who May Consider This Test

  • Individuals experiencing recurrent blisters, sores, or tingling sensations in the genital or oral area
  • Those whose sexual partner has a known herpes diagnosis
  • Anyone wishing to understand their HSV-1 and HSV-2 status for personal health awareness
  • Individuals planning pregnancy, as neonatal herpes — though rare — can be serious
  • People experiencing their first episode of genital symptoms (swab PCR is preferred for active lesions)
  • Those seeking peace of mind as part of a broader sexual health review

Preparing for Your Herpes Test

1

Blood serology: no fasting required — eat and drink as normal before your appointment

2

Swab PCR (for active lesions): do not apply creams, ointments, or antiseptics to the affected area before your appointment

3

Antibodies typically take 2–12 weeks to develop — testing during the window period may produce a false-negative result

4

Inform the nurse whether you have active symptoms, as this will determine the most appropriate test type

5

Allow approximately 10 minutes for your appointment

Important Clinical Information

Herpes serology detects past exposure and cannot determine when infection occurred. Antiviral treatment must be prescribed by a qualified clinician.
