Private Syphilis Testing in the City of London
Syphilis rates in England have increased substantially over the past decade, with UKHSA data showing cases at their highest levels since the 1940s. Treponema pallidum, the bacterium responsible for syphilis, causes infection that progresses through distinct stages if left untreated. Serological screening is the standard method for detection.
Our clinic offers syphilis screening using enzyme immunoassay (EIA) serology, which detects both treponemal antibodies and, in some assay formats, IgM antibodies that may indicate recent infection. This approach aligns with BASHH testing recommendations. It is important to understand that serological tests have a window period — antibodies may take several weeks to develop following exposure, and testing too early may produce a false-negative result.
If your syphilis test is reactive, our laboratory performs confirmatory testing automatically. However, all reactive results should be reviewed by a qualified clinician who can assess your clinical history, stage the infection, and prescribe appropriate treatment. Our clinic does not diagnose syphilis stages, prescribe treatment, or provide clinical interpretation beyond delivering your laboratory result.
Who May Consider This Test
- Men who have sex with men (MSM), where syphilis rates have risen most significantly
- Anyone who has noticed a painless sore (chancre) on the genitals, mouth, or rectum
- Individuals with an unexplained rash, particularly on the palms or soles of the feet
- Those with a sexual partner who has been diagnosed with syphilis
- Pregnant women, as syphilis can be transmitted vertically to the baby
- Anyone seeking comprehensive sexual health screening, particularly with new or multiple partners
Total: £125
