Private Gonorrhoea Testing in the City of London
Gonorrhoea is the second most common bacterial sexually transmitted infection in England, with cases continuing to rise year on year according to UKHSA surveillance data. Neisseria gonorrhoeae can infect the genitals, rectum, and throat, and may be present without noticeable symptoms in a significant proportion of cases.
Our clinic offers gonorrhoea testing using nucleic acid amplification testing (NAAT), the method recommended by the British Association for Sexual Health and HIV (BASHH). This molecular approach detects gonorrhoeal DNA and is significantly more sensitive than traditional culture methods for initial screening. Testing can be performed on urine, self-collected swabs, or clinician-collected samples from relevant anatomical sites.
Antimicrobial resistance in gonorrhoea is a growing public health concern. The emergence of resistant strains means that treatment guidelines are regularly updated. If your test is positive, it is essential that you attend a qualified healthcare provider — ideally an NHS sexual health clinic — for appropriate treatment and a test of cure. Our clinic does not prescribe antibiotics or provide treatment for gonorrhoea.
Who May Consider This Test
- Individuals with a new sexual partner or multiple partners, particularly if condoms have not been used consistently
- Anyone experiencing symptoms such as unusual discharge, pain during urination, or rectal discomfort
- Men who have sex with men (MSM), where pharyngeal and rectal testing is particularly important
- Those whose sexual partner has been diagnosed with gonorrhoea
- Anyone seeking a routine sexual health screen — gonorrhoea is frequently asymptomatic
- Individuals who have had unprotected oral or anal sex, as extra-genital infections are common
