Testosterone is the main male sex hormone (androgen), although it is also produced in smaller amounts in women. It plays a key role in libido, energy, mood, muscle mass, bone density, and red blood cell production.
This is a single-marker test that measures total testosterone — the overall amount of testosterone circulating in the blood, including both protein-bound and free fractions.
What the Dihydrotestosterone Measures
- Total testosterone — the combined level of protein-bound and free testosterone in the blood
- Reported alongside laboratory reference ranges appropriate to your sex and age
When This Test May Be Helpful
- Low libido, erectile difficulties, or reduced sexual function
- Persistent fatigue, low energy, or low mood
- Loss of muscle mass or strength, or increased body fat
- Suspected low testosterone (hypogonadism) or andropause
- Monitoring testosterone replacement therapy (TRT)
- Investigating symptoms such as excess hair growth or irregular periods in women
- Assessment in suspected polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
Preparation Before Your Test
Testosterone levels are typically highest in the early morning. For the most representative result, a morning blood sample is usually recommended, ideally before 10am.
No specific fasting is required, but you should inform the nurse of any hormone-related medications or supplements you are currently taking.
Understanding Your Results
Results are typically available within 7 days and are delivered securely.
Testosterone levels vary naturally through the day and are highest in the early morning, which is why a morning sample is recommended. Levels also decline gradually with age, and are affected by illness, sleep, body weight, and certain medications.
A single result should always be interpreted in clinical context. Low or borderline results are often repeated, and your GP or specialist may suggest additional tests such as SHBG, LH, FSH, or prolactin to build a fuller picture.
Important Information
This test provides laboratory results only. Testosterone levels require clinical interpretation. Please discuss your results with your GP or specialist for personalised advice.
