A full blood count (FBC) is one of the most commonly performed blood tests. It provides a broad overview of your blood health by measuring the different types of cells in your blood, including red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets.
An FBC is often one of the first tests used when investigating symptoms such as fatigue, infections, or unexplained bruising. It is also widely used as a routine health screening tool.
What the Full Blood Count Measures
- Red blood cells (RBC) and haemoglobin — assess oxygen-carrying capacity and screen for anaemia
- White blood cells (WBC) — indicate immune system activity and may suggest infection or inflammation
- Platelets — involved in blood clotting; abnormal levels may indicate bleeding or clotting disorders
- Mean cell volume (MCV) — the average size of red blood cells, which can help classify types of anaemia
- Haematocrit — the proportion of blood made up of red blood cells
When This Test May Be Helpful
- General health screening or routine check-up
- Unexplained tiredness, fatigue, or weakness
- Frequent infections or slow healing
- Unexplained bruising or bleeding
- Monitoring a known blood condition
- Before or after surgery
- Evaluating overall health alongside other tests
Understanding Your Results
Results are typically available within 1 day" and are delivered securely.
Your FBC results will show the number and characteristics of different blood cell types compared to standard reference ranges. Minor variations from the reference range are common and do not always indicate a health problem.
If any values are significantly outside the normal range, we recommend sharing your results with your GP, who can interpret them alongside your symptoms and medical history.
Important Information
This test provides laboratory results only. A full blood count is a screening tool and does not diagnose specific conditions. Please discuss any concerns with your GP.
