Hormones are chemical messengers produced by glands in the endocrine system. They regulate many of the body's essential processes, including metabolism, growth, mood, reproductive function, and sleep.

Hormonal imbalances can cause a wide range of symptoms and may affect both men and women at any age. Blood tests are the standard method for measuring hormone levels and can help identify imbalances that may be contributing to symptoms.

What the Prolactin (Venous) Measures

  • Reproductive hormones — including testosterone, oestrogen, progesterone, FSH, and LH
  • Sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) — a protein that affects the availability of sex hormones
  • Prolactin — a hormone involved in reproductive health
  • DHEA-S — a hormone produced by the adrenal glands

When This Test May Be Helpful

  • Changes in energy, mood, or libido
  • Irregular or absent menstrual periods
  • Symptoms associated with menopause or perimenopause
  • Difficulty conceiving or fertility concerns
  • Changes in body composition, hair growth, or skin
  • Monitoring hormone replacement therapy (HRT)
  • Assessing symptoms that may be related to hormonal changes

Preparation Before Your Test

Prolactin levels can be temporarily elevated by stress, exercise, and eating. For the most accurate result, a morning sample is recommended and you should try to rest quietly for 15 to 20 minutes before the blood draw.

Certain medications, including some antidepressants and antipsychotics, can affect prolactin levels. Let your clinician know about any medications you are taking.

Understanding Your Results

Results are typically available within 1 day" and are delivered securely.

Hormone levels can vary depending on time of day, menstrual cycle phase, age, and individual factors. Reference ranges on your report take many of these variables into account, but clinical context is important for interpretation.

If your hormone levels are outside the expected range, we recommend discussing your results with your GP or an appropriate specialist, who can advise on any further investigation or treatment.
