Private Testing for Urogenital Infections in the City of London
Urogenital infections caused by organisms such as Mycoplasma genitalium, Ureaplasma urealyticum, Trichomonas vaginalis, and Gardnerella vaginalis are increasingly recognised as clinically significant. These infections may cause symptoms including urethritis, vaginal discharge, pelvic discomfort, and pain during urination, though they can also be present without noticeable symptoms.
Our clinic offers targeted molecular testing using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technology, which provides sensitive and specific detection of these organisms. PCR testing is the recommended method for Mycoplasma genitalium in particular, as culture-based methods are unreliable for this slow-growing bacterium. BASHH guidelines recommend that Mycoplasma genitalium testing include macrolide resistance detection where available, to guide appropriate antibiotic selection.
It is important to understand that the detection of Ureaplasma or Gardnerella does not always indicate clinical disease, as these organisms can be part of the normal urogenital flora. Clinical interpretation of results in the context of your symptoms is essential and should be performed by a qualified medical practitioner. Our clinic does not provide clinical interpretation or prescribe antibiotics.
