Coeliac disease is an autoimmune condition where the immune system reacts to gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye. This immune reaction damages the lining of the small intestine and can impair nutrient absorption.
Coeliac disease affects approximately 1 in 100 people in the UK, though many cases remain undiagnosed. Blood tests that detect specific antibodies are the first step in investigating suspected coeliac disease.
What the Gluten Sensitivity Evaluation Measures
- Tissue transglutaminase antibodies (tTG-IgA) — the primary screening marker for coeliac disease
- Total IgA — to ensure the antibody test is valid (IgA deficiency can cause false negatives)
- Deamidated gliadin peptide antibodies — an additional marker used in some profiles
When This Test May Be Helpful
- Persistent digestive symptoms such as bloating, diarrhoea, or abdominal pain
- Unexplained iron deficiency anaemia
- Unexplained weight loss or fatigue
- A family history of coeliac disease
- Skin conditions such as dermatitis herpetiformis
- Unexplained nutrient deficiencies (e.g. folate, calcium, vitamin D)
- Screening in associated conditions (e.g. type 1 diabetes, autoimmune thyroid disease)
Preparation Before Your Test
You must be eating gluten-containing foods regularly for at least 6 weeks before this test. Removing gluten from your diet before testing can produce a false negative result.
If you have already started a gluten-free diet, speak with your GP before booking this test.
Understanding Your Results
Results are typically available within 2 days" and are delivered securely.
A positive tTG-IgA result suggests the presence of coeliac-related antibodies. However, coeliac disease cannot be diagnosed from a blood test alone — a gut biopsy is usually required to confirm the diagnosis.
Importantly, you must be eating gluten regularly at the time of the test (for at least 6 weeks) for the antibody test to be accurate. If you have already removed gluten from your diet, discuss this with your GP before testing.
Important Information
This test provides laboratory results only. A positive result requires further clinical assessment, typically including a gut biopsy, to confirm a diagnosis of coeliac disease. Please consult your GP.
