The kidneys are two bean-shaped organs that filter waste products and excess fluid from the blood, regulate electrolyte balance, and help control blood pressure. They process approximately 200 litres of blood every day.
Kidney function can decline gradually over time, often without symptoms until a significant amount of function has been lost. Regular testing is particularly important for individuals with risk factors such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or a family history of kidney disease.
What the Creatinine (including eGFR) (Venous) Measures
- Creatinine — a waste product filtered by the kidneys; elevated levels may indicate reduced kidney function
- eGFR (estimated glomerular filtration rate) — a calculated estimate of how well the kidneys are filtering waste
- Urea — a waste product from protein metabolism, processed by the kidneys
- Electrolytes (sodium, potassium) — minerals regulated by the kidneys
When This Test May Be Helpful
- Routine health screening
- Diabetes or high blood pressure
- Taking medications that may affect the kidneys (e.g. NSAIDs, certain blood pressure drugs)
- A family history of kidney disease
- Unexplained swelling in the ankles or feet
- Changes in urination frequency or appearance
- Monitoring a known kidney condition
Understanding Your Results
Results are typically available within 1 day" and are delivered securely.
An eGFR above 90 mL/min generally indicates normal kidney function, while values below 60 mL/min sustained over three months may suggest chronic kidney disease. However, eGFR can be affected by age, muscle mass, and other factors.
If your results suggest reduced kidney function, we recommend consulting your GP for clinical interpretation and guidance on any next steps.
