Diabetes and prediabetes are increasingly common in the UK. According to Diabetes UK, over 4.9 million people in the UK are living with diabetes, and many more are at risk without being aware.

Blood tests for glucose and HbA1c are the standard methods used to screen for diabetes and monitor blood sugar control. Early detection of prediabetes allows for lifestyle changes that may help prevent or delay the development of type 2 diabetes.

What the Hyperinsulinism NGS Panel Measures

  • HbA1c — measures average blood sugar levels over the past 2 to 3 months
  • Fasting glucose — the level of glucose in the blood after an overnight fast
  • Insulin — the hormone that regulates blood sugar levels

When This Test May Be Helpful

  • A family history of diabetes
  • Being overweight or having a sedentary lifestyle
  • Symptoms such as increased thirst, frequent urination, or unexplained fatigue
  • Previous gestational diabetes
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
  • Monitoring known diabetes or prediabetes
  • Assessing the effectiveness of diabetes medication or lifestyle changes

Preparation Before Your Test

HbA1c tests do not require fasting. If your test includes a fasting glucose component, you will need to fast for 8 to 12 hours beforehand — water is permitted.

You will be informed at the time of booking if fasting is required.

Understanding Your Results

Results are typically available within 6 weeks" and are delivered securely.

An HbA1c below 42 mmol/mol is generally considered normal. A result between 42 and 47 mmol/mol may indicate prediabetes, while 48 mmol/mol or above is the threshold commonly used for diagnosing diabetes. However, diagnosis should always be confirmed by a clinician.

If your results are elevated, we recommend discussing them with your GP, who can provide clinical interpretation and advise on dietary changes, lifestyle modifications, or medication if needed.

Important Information

This test provides laboratory results only and does not constitute a diabetes diagnosis. Please consult your GP for clinical interpretation, formal diagnosis, and treatment advice.
